Service Projects: Ghana NICU

Ghana NICU Project Update

ACCRA, GHANA: Thanks to funds that have been sent to Ghana from Idaho, the general contractor in charge of the construction of the NICU wing of the University Hospital in East Legon has resumed efforts to complete the much needed Neonatal Intensive Care wing.

What began a few years ago as a desperate need to refurbish the Children’s Maternity Ward of the University Hospital made the Accra Legon East Rotary Club aware of the critical need for neonatal intensive care. In true Rotary fashion, the club began with a groundbreaking and erection of a concrete block addition specifically dedicated as a NICU. This effort will help save the lives of newborn infants who lack proper medical facilities and care.

Because an existing project relationship had already been established between the Pocatello Rotary Club and the Accra Legon East Rotary Club it seemed a natural fit to also partner on the NICU project. Thanks to additional generous support from other D5400 clubs including the
Pocatello Gate City Club, the Montpellier Club, the Burley Rotary Club, the Blue Lakes Twin Falls club, the Gooding Rotary Club, and the Pocatello Rotary Club nearly three fourths of the funds needed to complete construction has been raised!

The general contractor’s most recent report showed:

Windows Installation: The installation of windows is now finished, encompassing all necessary components.

Ceiling Naggings: The construction team has diligently worked on the ceiling naggings in preparation for the plasterboard installation.

Eve Ceiling Completion: The eave ceiling has been successfully completed, adding an essential finishing touch to the overall structure. This achievement contributes to the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the building.

Pending Electrical and Oxygen Piping : At present, the remaining tasks primarily revolve around the electrical and oxygen piping systems. Regarding the oxygen piping, the marking out of the designated points has been accomplished. The next step entails obtaining approval to proceed promptly. Following the oxygen piping, the electrical works will commence in a sequential order.
